Nikhil Banerjee is one of India's most distinguished sitar
players. Very sensibly, he devoted the whole of the time available
to him to one raga - Sham Kalyan. In the opening section he created
a poetic, mysterious suggestion of evening, pulling sideways on
the strings with power and delicacy in order to shape the notes
expressively. After the drummer -- the talented Swapan Chaudhuri
-- began to accompany him, he played with more and more brilliance,
and ended with a triumphant outpouring of joyful virtuosity.
